About MAKAM
Moved by the deprived status of the marginalised community, a team of like-minded youth, in the year 1990, who belong to the deprived section of our community and happened to be the first generation educated people, joined hands together with the objectives of ensuring education to the children and adults at the margins of our society. Towards this end, they have initiated school enrolment drive and steps for preventing children dropping out from school.
‘Makkal Kalvi Valarchi Maiyam’ (Centre for Education & Development), shortly known as ‘MAKAM’) attained its legal status in the year 1993. The activities were purely voluntary and the Board of Trustees could cover only Chetpet Town and 15 villages around Chetpet Block until 2001. Later in 2004, MAKAM extended its social development initiatives to 15 villages in Melmalayanur Block of Villupuram District. The organisation has built a conducive working atmosphere with the local Government and has developed its capacities to work with the different stakeholders. The organisation has very good administrative structure and a team of Technical Workers, full-time as well as Part-time Workers to work at the field-level.
MAKAM strives to promote the development and well-being of all Indians, especially of the people at the margins of society, so that they may individually and collectively reach their fullest potential and thereby became capable of leading a dignified life.
